The Lucky Cat: A Solo Performance

Written and performed at Elon University (2023).

The Lucky Cat centers a hopeful high school senior and aspiring physicist, Danielle Williams as she navigates the treacherous process of applying for colleges through the Common Application. When the questions become more and more intrusive concerning her identity, she finds that she may be caught in an experiment not unlike the famous thought experiment of her academic hero, Schrödinger.

The culmination of my capstone fellows research project at Elon University, The Lucky Cat served as my contribution to the cannon of stories featuring characters and themes of transnational adoption. I found that many pieces in mainstream media centered savior narratives, or trauma-indulgent story points that continued to paint a rather one-dimensional portrait of characters who have been adopted.

My research question, how can solo performance be a means to present a different side of the story. I have always been a believer that art is one of the most powerful vehicles of change. With the guidance of incredible mentors, I found that there is incredible power by telling very specific, nuanced, and rather personal stories in hopes that through one story at a time, the world's perception of such complex topics could expand.
